
Following some turbulent times, the Rahe family acquired the estate in 1993 and set forth to make some far reaching decisions. The most important being to undertake the difficult and laborious task of converting the ‘old Jacob’ into a modern luxury hotel and to reconnect with its glorious culinary past. In the course of only three years the new ‘Jacob’ emerged, recommended by preservationists and admired by architects for the successful adjustment to the exacting standards of the late 20th century, this was a true metamorphosis from Hamburg’s good pub to international luxury hotel.’.
The project entailed preservation and sympathetic enlargement of the main building on the hills above the Elbe. Simultaneously several historically important buildings on the opposite side of the Elbchaussee where completely renovated and incorporated in this major project. Proprietor, Horst Rahe, was personally engaged in the project and guided the historic legacy towards the the new millennium with due care and responsabillity. The new Jacob opened in 1996 - once again the hotel is a top address in Hamburg. In the ensuing years the hotel has earned countless accolades, its international recognition is manifested in being one of the 120 ‘Leading Small Hotels of the World’
